Douglas L Colonell founded King Construction, Inc. in 1997. After many years of experience working for other respected building companies in Maryland and Washington, DC., Doug Colonell decided to pursue a lifelong dream of owning his own building company. As a young boy, Colonell learned the building business following his grandfather. During high school and college summers, he could be found framing homes earning his tuition.
Doug studied engineering/architecture and business administration in college. Then as a young husband, father and businessman, he studied construction and contract law during night school all while his career working for established building companies prospered. His career included years working in Washington DC and Baltimore constructing interior build outs, base buildings, historic building restoration and luxury homes. He continued this for years before he was ready to go at it alone. For Doug, building was in his bloodline – roots stemmed from Italian stone masons to Irish bricklayers and carpenters. Doug’s grandfather was a popular developer/builder of residential homes and neighborhoods of iconic reputation, but in recognition to his uncle, an architect by trade, a decorated US Air Force fighter pilot, he named the new enterprise after him – “KING” which was his nickname.
The culture carefully tended by Doug, was one that focused on giving clients the level of service and quality while paying close attention to the details that he himself would demand thus King enjoys steady growth year over year.

Featuring proven managers, costing estimators, expert schedulers and support staff King is able to provide gold service from its headquarters located in Baltimore, Maryland. King works throughout the Mid-Atlantic region specializing in building retail centers, office buildings, warehouses and commercial projects. Areas include Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, New Hampshire and the Carolinas. At some point in the future, King plans to add a regional branch office in Florida.
Throughout the years, King has maintained a firm financial position without debt and a $ 75 Million bonding capacity while successfully completing more than 2,000 projects earning an excellent reputation. King prides itself of the successful work of base building interior fit-out, remodeling/renovations, retail & restaurant construction all while picking up several awards for excellence and safety! At King, technology is priority where the latest scheduling software and computing equipment is implemented to help everyone involved in the building process is up to date and well informed. Teamwork is job 1.
King’s project control systems, coupled with a genuine commitment to teamwork and diligent attention to detail, have been recognized time and again as the key delivering successful projects for our clients. King has a strong commitment to the strict scheduling of its work and employs the use of MS Project, Primavera and Sure Track programs to suit the unique provisions of the work.
